“Mufford has a show that succeeds admirably in replacing Cezanne's celebrated dispassion with, well, passionfruit. And grapes and plums...these paintings so openly announce their intention to seduce you that it is almost embarrassing standing there letting it happen."

Pulitzer Prize writer and Critic, Sebastian Smee (1998 SMH review)

Born in Bellingen, NSW, Sarah Mufford recently returned to Gumbaynggirr country on the North Coast after more than 20 years in Sydney. Working predominantly in 2D, her labour-intensive geometric abstractions draw on both Eastern and Western pattern systems, juxtaposing intuitive staining and mark-making processes with hard-edge geometry.

Educated at the Australian National University’s Canberra School of Art, she completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts before undertaking postgraduate studies at the University of Technology Sydney. Over more than three decades she has maintained a consistent national presence, exhibiting widely in both solo and group contexts. Solo presentations include shows at Yarrila Arts & Museum, Nulla Nulla Regional Gallery, Liverpool St Gallery Project Space and AirSpace Projects in Sydney, while group exhibitions have featured work In Alice Springs, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and numerous regional areas.

Her practice has extended beyond exhibition rooms into collaborative and research-based projects. In 2021 she was joint coordinator of the three‑year Art + Science collaboration The White Bluff Project, developed in partnership with Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery. International residencies in Italy and research trips to Iran, India and southern Spain have informed her work, particularly through studies of Islamic and pre‑Islamic art and architecture.

Her work is regularly recognised in numerous awards and prizes. She has been a finalist in The Alice Prize (22,24) and the 2022 Libris Awards, Hazelhurst Art on Paper (17, 19,21) including a commendation. Other distinctions include finalist places in the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award and the Banyule Works on Paper Award in Melbourne, where she received the Commendation Prize.

Mufford’s practice is characterised by meticulous surface work and a dialogue between instinctive mark-making and structured pattern. Her work synthesises cross-cultural ornamentation and contemporary abstraction, informed by direct research into historical architectural and decorative systems.
